need a hand to understand genetics please

not been on for a while, due to ill health!
couldn't find a genetics page so wrote on breeding section.

anyhow, I love mice and everything to do with them, since last year or so ive been trying to understand the genetics, colours and markings. I find it fascinating how people can look at a picture and know the right colour, all the terms like recessive, diluted etc. ive tried reading up on the locus, alleles and others but just don't understand what goes where, what does what lol

I read the description of what it does but theres so much to take in?
so im asking if anyone can simplify it for me? silly I know.

so silly question alert....
what determines the markings, say Hereford, dutch, banded etc?
what order if any is best to learn?
and many more questions I can even put into words as I don't know what im trying to ask

any help would be great. im sure its easy when I know how

I hope you're feeling better now, it's good to have you back.

I don't know much about genetics I'm afraid. I think Zany has a background in biology and a good knowledge of genetics and perhaps Cordane or one of the other breeders can help.
